Kumu
Kumu Hula Kalani Viloria
Kalani began dancing at the age of 2 under the direction of his mākua and Kumu Hula Kawika & Leinani Viloria, even later earning titles in California Hula competitions as Mr. Ia Oe E Ka Lā & Mr. E Hula Mau. As an ʻōlapa, Kalani was blessed by the opportunity to learn from Master Chanter, and family mentor, Kumu Hula Charles Kaʻupu. After developing a deeper sense of kuleana as future Kumu Hula and fulfilling a wish of his late Gramma Geri, Kalani moved to Hawaiʻi to learn under his Uncle, Kumu Hula Chinky Māhoe. It was there he was able to grace the Merrie Monarch stage in honor and representation of his entire hula lineage. By the grace of God and with the blessings and guidance of his Kumu, Kalani opened Kapiliwaiokeao in 2023.
Ka ʻOhana Viloria
Although, Kumu Kalani will say becoming Kumu Hula is what we was groomed to do and destined to become...perpetuating the Hawaiian culture through hālau hula is a family affair. Kumu Kalaniʻs wife, Hiwa, as poʻe hula herself, under the tutelage of Kumu Kapua Dalire-Moe, will provide kakoʻo for hālau. Their hiapo, Kaleihiwa, having attended kaiapuni and again, poʻe hula himself, will also provide kakoʻo for hālau.
Just like Kalaniʻs mākua, it is his hopes that one of his keiki will find the same passion for hula and continue the legacy.
Kuleana
The piko, the center, of our hālau is ke Akua. The bones & foundation of our hālau is ʻohana. It is our hopes, that when you come to hula with us, you feel a sense of the aloha spirit that our culture prides itself on. It is because we pride ourselves in building a strong foundation with our haumāna, that everyone becomes ʻohana.
We understand the kuleana that comes with perpetuating the Hawaiian culture so far from home. It is our hope that with our continued efforts through our pilina with our kumu in Hawaiʻi we are able continue to bridge the gap.
